If you feel any kind of sensation that could be interpreted as pain for an inch or 3 on either side of your joint – pull back. Those are ligaments and ligaments don’t stretch. Aim for the sensation of stretching (not pain!), even if it means bending your knees or using props like yoga blocks or straps. If you’re not sure what sensation you are supposed to be feeling – ask! Your teacher will cue you to move your body into a place you should be able to feel the desired sensation. 
  • Celebrate small wins: Be patient with your body and celebrate even minor improvements in flexibility. Every stretch, every hold, contributes to building a more open and comfortable practice.
  • Embrace modifications: Don’t be afraid to modify poses! Many yoga poses have variations that cater to different levels of flexibility. Don’t hesitate to ask your instructor for guidance on modifications that are safe and effective for you.

Remember, flexibility is a journey, not a destination. As you consistently practice yoga for beginners, your body will naturally become more flexible over time. And even if you never touch your toes – that’s ok! You Absolutely Do Not Have To Touch Your Toes To Do Yoga.

No mat? No problem! Many poses can be done standing or seated – and there are plenty of classes out there that don’t utilize a mat. 
  • Props can enhance your practice: While not essential, yoga props like blocks, straps, and bolsters can help you achieve proper alignment and improve accessibility in certain poses. You can use household items like blankets or pillows as substitutes until you invest in dedicated props.
